Planning your study abroad adventure is a big part of the fun. With so many fascinating locations to dream about, intriguing academic programs to choose from and activities and excursions to add to your to-see list, you can get carried away by romantic notions of far-off locales.

One part of study abroad preparation is not quite as much fun though: the financial side.

How will you pay for all of those things you’ve been getting so excited about? Sometimes just the price of the flights alone can make everything seem suddenly unattainable, but don’t let that scare you off. There are actually all kinds of funding options available for students planning foreign study. Here are a few:

Anyone interested in studying abroad has probably heard the saying that your time spent studying in a foreign country will be “the experience of a lifetime.” Well, let me tell you — it truly is. So great, in fact, that you might end up wanting to find a way to extend that international experience.

But we are examples of how it is possible to live abroad after your study abroad program has finished. Here are several ways it can be accomplished:

While studying abroad, among the other priceless possibilities that lie before you, the chance to make lifelong friends from around the world is one of the sweetest. While in a foreign country, thousands of miles from home, these special people become not only your friends in the traditional sense, but also your family in many ways.

You might spend certain holidays with them, celebrate birthdays together and share the excitement of trying or cooking local cuisine. You can also explore your base city and beyond with your new comrades, and the memories you’ll gain from all these adventures are ones that you will cherish forever.

While becoming pals with the people in your program is all fine and dandy, some students may long to meet locals, students in other fields of study or even long-term expats living in the region. This is great for getting a more well-rounded travel experience and for learning lots about your temporary home, and luckily there are plenty of places that this can be achieved.

When you think of study abroad programs, how long do you think you’d stay in another country? The typical answer from students is one semester, whether they have given the whole study abroad thing much thought or not.

I’d like to help rid you of that notion once and for all. There are oodles of other options outside the standard four-month block of time — and at different times of the year, as opposed to the usual fall or spring semester.

If you were discouraged by what seemed to be limited possibilities in when you could go overseas and for how long — don’t be. You can study abroad your way and still get class credit.

Scope out these other interesting ways to have your international adventure, and get even more excited about going abroad.

As Ireland’s national holiday approaches, visions of all things green will sweep over the island, as well as fill the minds of Irish descendents spread across the globe, many of whom make pilgrimages back to their motherland on the ever-popular St. Patrick’s Day. Green everything in all shades is usually the order of the day, especially for those visitors looking to make their visit to the Emerald Isle, well, extremely emerald. Green beer, green clothing (sometimes resembling leprechaun daily wear…), goofy green hats, sunglasses and other random accessories – you name it, and you can most likely find it on these rambunctious revelers. But what if your idea of green is something a little less about the color and the corresponding partying and a little more about the environment? Well don’t worry, because Ireland’s still got you covered – after all, the island doesn’t retain that stunning shamrock-esque color by not being eco-friendly! Discover a few of the isle’s intriguing pro-Earth offerings below, and perhaps descend upon this gem-hued land this spring for a whole other type of green getaway.

The last place anyone wants while studying abroad is living in a boring location. By boring, I don’t just mean the place has little to offer, but also by the total of your friends and fellow American college students who have been there.

So often it seems that students from the U.S. tend to go to the same handful of places again and again when studying overseas. Those places are all fine choices, but aren’t original picks by any means.

Studying abroad in a unique location could do wonders for your street cred on campus. You might become known as an exotic world traveler or a brave explorer who sets off without fear for the great unknown – which are both true anyway, right?

So, check out these locales to kick your sense of adventure into high gear!
